Waukesha Civic Theatre exceeds expectations with 'Seussical'

By JULIE McHALE - TimeOut Theater Critic
August 7, 2009

Having seen the phenomenal production of "Seussical the Musical" by First Stage Theatre, starring the incomparable Norman Moses as Horton and Gerald Nugent as the Cat in the Hat, I lowered my expectations when discovering that Waukesha Civic Theatre was planning to fill its summer musical spot with this same offering. I shouldn’t have. It, too, was a blockbuster production.

Those of us who grew up with Dr. Seuss likely have a great fondness for his unusual plots, unique characters and quirky rhymes. To have drawn from 17 of his books and created a musical was no small task for playwrights/composers Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, but they achieved the impossible - and this confection is here to delight us.

The plot line is a bit murky, but there are the usual good guys and bad guys. There are lessons to be learned, and there are characters who amuse and move us. The Cat in the Hat narrates the story, but the limelight is on Horton the Elephant. He is the one who discovers the Whos and tries to prevent their extinction despite the criticism and ostracism he suffers. He is the one who faithfully tends to the egg that Mayzie has abandoned, though it traps him in a tree. Corey Richards has the perfect voice and demeanor for this role. We love him, period.

Paul Burkard captures the zany quality of Seuss. His ability to take on many accents and roles as well as dance with abandon evoked sheer glee in the hearts of the children in the audience. They shrieked with delight, but he amused us all.

Other characters who recreated their roles with verve and plausibility include Amy Stenzel as the Sour Kangaroo, Michela Kealey as Mayzie LaBird and MaryAnn Vance as Mrs. Major. I loved the sweetness of Samantha Burkard’s Gertrude, the one-tail-feather bird who loves Horton, but her voice needs a bit more volume.

The trios of Wickersham Boys and Bird Girls both performed with harmonious energy, thanks to the efforts and talents of Jake Konrath, John Michl, Trevor Rees, Lauren Ashley, Lisa Peplinski and an unlisted third girl. JoJo, the little Who with wonderful "thinks," was well played by Jon Olsen, although he probably could have used a microphone.

The costume designer (Sallie Burkard), the scenic designer (Mike Halaska), the lighting designer (Scott Fudall) and the stage manager (Katie Danner) all merit a great deal of credit, but the man who pulled it all together so deliciously and unforgettably is Jacob Sudbrink, who served as director, music director and sound designer, obviously a man of many talents and more energy than anyone deserves.

This show must be seen. The house should be filled for every performance with those who love spectacle, good music, credible acting and the charm and wisdom of Dr. Seuss. Call 542-0708 for times and tickets.

The show runs through Sunday.

MaryAnn’s enthusiastic nature and cheerfulness were appreciated by all of her fellow cast and crew. She was always ready to help with whatever it took to make this show a success. She frequently helped out in ways that went over and above all expectations. One cast member said that she was "... the ray of sunshine this cast needed." Another said "She is the sweetest woman in the world."
