'Shrek the Musical Jr.' entertains

WAUKESHA - The Waukesha Civic Theatre took on over 60 children in two casts to present the beloved “Shrek the Musical Jr.,” a very brave and generous undertaking indeed. Overall they delivered an entertaining production with a few weaknesses via the direction of Jes and Jacob Sudbrink. One could tell by the response of the enthusiastic audience that they were enjoying the performances of their little darlings.

The message of the story is that we must learn to accept people as they are and not insist they conform to our expectations. Shrek is one those characters who elicits our sympathies as do the Ugly Duckling, Pinocchio, The Beast, and Dumbo, to name a few. The stories they inhabit are designed to teach children (and adults, some of whom still don’t get it) not to judge people by their appearance, but to look beyond the external. It is a powerful lesson and one that is apparently hard to grasp, or bullying would be nonexistent.

In the blue cast, Danny Muntz plays Shrek, and even though there is something endearing about his take on the role, he is hard to hear at times. The donkey is very well rendered by Laura Laberge. She has a strong presence and is lovably annoying. Another very excellent performance is delivered by the three actors who play Fiona at different ages. McKinley Evenson, Bella Portale and Angie Wagenknecht all are impressive, especially in their solos. Lily Baranowski is also a show stopper in her role as Dragon, and McKinley again wows us in her dual role as Tinkerbell. These young actors show genuine promise.

We enjoyed Demi Dieringer as Lord Farquaad, the bad guy, who ironically kicks all the misfits out of his kingdom, even though he is a misfit himself. The ensemble number of the Dulocians is quite amusing. Their costumes are wonderful as are many of them, thanks to the creativity of Darcy Devens and her busy crew of outfitters.

The set, though somewhat precarious, works well (Mark Brooks) with changes moving quite smoothly. The ensemble numbers are stronger than some of the solos, but enthusiasm always compensates for an occasional lack of tonal purity.

The house was packed, the response was hearty, and a lot of people deserve credit for putting together this worthwhile experience for actors and audience alike.
